This is the Statt Mann Baby. Time to Scatt a little bit…

Thankfully Darrell Wallace busted his victory cherry last weekend at Talladega. He’s the first black driver to win a Cup race in 57 years. You know the details if you care.

From what I’ve seen, though, there’s one thing that few are talking about. Three weeks ago, Wallace got a new crew chief, veteran Bootie Barker. He’s now calling race strategy.

As people asked me about Wallace’s history making win, I could only remember that Darrell would go into the pits late in a race running fourth and come out 15th. That’s unacceptable. Maybe better strategy will fight that going forward.

Darrell’s win came in race 31 of the season. He’s only the third driver from an underfunded team to win this year. Let that sink in. His victory was that special.

What may not change, though, is the kind of nonsense heard from former champion Bobby Labonte. Labonte went on TV three days ago criticizing Wallace for not responding to Labonte’s congratulatory text message. That kind of arrogance deserves no further comment.

Peace.
