This is the Statt Mann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.

I was reminded the other day that people continue to compete in Sport Compact drag racing. Some are even sponsored by automakers from Japan and Detroit.

The season’s first significant event unfolded outside Atlanta this weekend. There’ll be another next weekend in Florida.

Remember nine or ten years ago when import drag racing was supposed to replace domestic drag racing within ten years? How’s that working out for you today, huh?

In 2000, there were four or five national series. Most think that was the problem. Now the main one is NOPI. Even the NHRA bailed on the sport last fall.

To be fair the NOPI party is entertaining. But I wouldn’t be surprised if parts of the party, especially the foam baths and Jell-O wrestling, go away as sponsors figure out a way to give NOPI their money without being embarrassed about it on Monday.

At least the NHRA kept mainstream motorsport media in contact with the Sport Compacts. That was never a NOPI strong suit.

After all, when you throw a party you only want the invitees showing up. Right?

Peace.
