This is the Statt Mann, Baby. It’s time to Scatt a Little Bit…

To say motor racing’s at a crossroads is an understatement. It’s been in that crosswalk ever since Dale Earnhardt’s death in 2001. The accident that killed young driver Kevin Ward, Jr. August 9th only sheds light on an industry hiding behind the phrase: “Racing’s dangerous.”

Why you need a rule to keep drivers from going out in race track traffic is beyond me. It would seem obvious.

I’m just as tired of the phrases: “Drivers know the risks…” And the hackneyed cliche: “Racing is entertainment. We do it for the fans.”

There’s nothing entertaining about showing video of a man’s death over and over again just to get fans to watch a TV show. You wonder how the Kevin Ward Family survived the past week with all that going on.

Or, for that matter, there’s nothing entertaining about showing video of racing accidents in general just to get fans to buy tickets or tune into a televised race.

I saw a report Sunday that said most of the racing deaths in the past 25 years happened at short tracks where industry standard safety features aren’t installed.

Makes you wonder: Is it racing that’s dangerous or the people who promote and make money from it.

Peace.
