Remember Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Rallycross? It’s still out there as Nitrocross, a fusion of European rallycross and X Games.

The competition’s great but I’m thoroughly impressed with the series commitment to technology and sustainable fuel. It has classes for electric cars and internal combustion engines that use fossil free fuel.

Ford, Subaru and Volkswagen support the electric car program that headlines the series. Nitrocross calls it Group E.

The electric cars produce up to eleven hundred horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 in 1.4 seconds. They say it’s faster than a Formula One car. The fully charged batteries will produce 13 minutes of what’s called full bore racing. They’ll recharge in 25 minutes.

The drivers are from around the globe. Kevin Eriksson of Sweden leads the points going into this weekend’s Glen Helen round in Southern California. But Americans Travis Pastrana, Conner Martell, Brian Deegan, Conor Daly and Tanner Foust have scored points.

This season’s final event is next February in Calgary, Canada.
