Electrification isn’t Coming. It’s Here!

That buzz you hear is electrification taking over motorsport.

The NHRA just announced a sportsman class for electric vehicles.

A former world rallycross star is diving into the electric vehicle class in that series hoping to become the category’s first world champion.

The image above is from the Pikes Peak Hillclimb where the VW prototype shown broke the record up the hill.  Any series that wants auto maker support without an EV class doesn’t understand what business it’s in now.

Last week Formula E ran into a fiasco in Valencia when it learned that braking on permanent road courses is different than braking on street courses where it usually races.

It’s the braking that generates the energy to charge batteries. Without heavy braking racers and race cars had trouble getting to the end of the race before the batteries died.

Electrification isn’t coming. It’s here. Like it or not, getting EVs from the racetrack to your driveway is job one for automakers.
