It’s been a CRAZY fifteen years, hasn’t it? None of it would be possible unless you come back every week and keep your residency current in The Freak Nation.
The Freaks have experienced so much in the past fifteen years: Tragic, painful deaths offset by exhilarating highs when friends and strangers find success.
Travis Pastrana shocked us over and over But his ability to reach out and befriend children impressed me more than anything Travis has ever done.
But the one personality that has impressed me more than anyone is Ken Block. I found an old picture of him from my files when he was just another guy in a white plain wrap Subaru on a rally ten years ago. No one knew him.
Since then Ken has become one of the largest motor sports personalities in the world. Nearly six million people follow him on Facebook. His Web videos have been seen more than three hundred million times.
He came within five points of a championship last year in rallycross.
And all of this from a guy who started racing at an age when others are stopping. He competes against drivers who could be his sons. And he beats them.
Ken Block’s ascension to global phenomenon might be the most impressive thing I’ve seen in the fifteen years of SpeedFreaks.
Here’s to fifteen more for us AND for Ken.
