This is the Statt Mann Baby. It’s time to Scatt a little bit.

Saturday night’s debut of the Gymkhana Grid competition at X Games Los Angeles kind of grew on me as I watched.

Most people think of Gymkhana as the skills driving that Ken Block does in his popular Internet-based video series. Hundreds of millions have watched those videos.

So the people at X Games went to Ken and asked if he could back a competition here at the Irwindale Speedway.

The crowd was there. We could have had more cars but what we got was an intense competition of driving skill.

If rallycross is the equivalent of the NBA Dunk Contest on All-Star weekend, the Gymkhana Grid might be the three-point shootout. It’s more skill than brute force of will.

Tanner Foust won as he did a few years ago when Block had an invitational event on the same Irwindale track. But Ken told me this afternoon that X Games liked the show and we may see more of it.

Here’s hoping we will. There’s nothing wrong with knowing how to drive if you’re going to be in a driving competition. Right turns. Left turns. Obstacles. Speed. Drifting. Driving. What a novel concept in the American consciousness.

Peace.
